A Recommendation Apropos of Health Safety Risk Assessment
It’s belief in a significant number of businesses that, by giving each employee basic training in health & safety, they have all the skills they need to cope with a disaster. Realistically however, basic education in health & safety regulatory affairs just is not enough. You need to supply your staff with competent supervision, the appropriate equipment, and last but not least regular practice.
All teams need an excellent supervisor to observe staff performance, but this person must also perform a greater function. Whomever you select as the supervisor must see their health & safety training as essential and be able to share their enthusiasm about it.
On top of enforcing rules and regulations, the supervisor must also check that employees perform every task well. This isn’t a easy job. A skilled supervisor must possess an in-depth knowledge of the industry best practice and the product not to mention a high level of comprehension of the safety legislation, the identification of hazards, and CPR.
It’s just not adequate to offer your employees health & safety training. They need to have practical experience of risk assessment and the recognition of problem areas. Staff need to understand the best way of eliminating safety risks as well as understanding what to do when disaster strikes. Staff are only totally prepared when their training and procedures have become second nature.
Instruction is in fact useless without safety gear. Without the correct supplies or if they see that supplies are broken when they really need them, the safety training your staff have undergone will have been a waste of time and effort. Maintaining your equipment on a regular basis is invaluable. If your gear is in less than perfect working order, make sure that it is mended speedily and returned to the appropriate place.
Your staff must get the right health and safety instruction, but they need good quality equipment, the opportunity to practise, and an educated supervisor who can get employees charged up about being safe at work. And then following health & safety legislation will soon become established in your business culture not something troublesome everyone has to try to remember all the time.
